The National Dog Show commemorates its 20th anniversary with new breeds and special tribute

After having to reduce the number of canine participants last year and limit the audience to cardboard cutouts, the "National Dog Show" was fully relaunched-even introducing a new breed and an expanded secondary show. Since the holiday event marks its 20th year, the timing couldn't be better.

"This has been an incredibly successful family vacation tradition for 20 years," said Jon Miller, founder of the National Dog Show and president of NBC Sports Group programs. "We have become an important part of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade. Families will get together and watch the show with their dog, or if they are interested in raising a dog, this is a great place to watch and learn about all these different breeds. One of the great things about this show is that it shows all the different varieties, and you will understand each one."

Educating the audience about dogs couldn’t be more important, because the ASPCA reported that during the COVID-19 pandemic, 23 million households received a pet (many of them are canines), and now the world is reopening. Animals will have to make adjustments to be separated from their human counterparts for a longer period of time. This is what the "National Dog Show" tends toward in the comments of the hosts David Frey and John O'Hley, and Mary Carrillo, who reports with the processing staff in the background.

"We have a lot of people who understand the business and the variety," Miller said of the team.

Purina's sponsor of the show also tends to discuss the importance of dog health and the importance of dogs to the family during the pandemic, which was the surface they touched last year.

In 2020, the "National Dog Show" can still go on. This is a feat when families cannot travel to meet each other. In order to produce the show safely, fewer breeders and trainers flew in, limiting canine contestants to about 600, which is more than two-thirds less than the usual 2,000 contestants. The show ensures that all handlers and staff wear masks, but it completely skips the live audience. One year later, as the pandemic continued, the dog breeds at the "National Dog Show" resumed full production, including an additional breed: Biewer Terrier, part of the Toy Group, is launching this year, bringing the total number to the breeds recognized on the show. The number reached 209.

"We let the Philadelphia Kennel Club decide these things, and they do it with the American Kennel Club," Miller said of adding a new breed, which has happened 50 times in the show's 20-year history. "Our job here is really to show and bring home the dog show; our goal is entertainment and education."

The performance in 2021 ushered in a live audience, but only 75% of the audience. (Miller points out that some cuts are returned as seat padding.) Miller said that as the guidelines change throughout the year, there have been nearly eight months of meetings between environmental health and safety personnel to develop logistics. Finally, the rule is that everyone who enters the space and therefore enters the set must be vaccinated, from the staff to the audience to the operator. This means that "The National Dog Show Jr." can only allow children 12 years and older to be the primary handlers due to the age limit for vaccines when preparing for the show.

Miller talked about the "National Team Dog Show."

However, this year, the "National Dog Show" will not only celebrate four-legged friends: the two-hour broadcast will also pay tribute to Paul Carson, one of the founders of the event. Miller said that he died in June, which made this a "difficult event" for the rest of the team, including his wife Casey. "We will spend a little time on the Thanksgiving broadcast to meet and commemorate him."

In addition, the McDonald’s Uncle House, which provides support to families of sick children, returned as a beneficiary of this event.

"As the'National Dog Show' develops, we hope that the McDonald's House will develop with it," said Susan Campbell, CEO of the Philadelphia McDonald's House. “During COVID, we must pay attention to ensuring the safety of patients, which has led us to suspend many volunteer programs. Just this fall, we began to re-introduce our treatment dog program. When we let treatment dogs re-interact with our family One night later, we saw the smiles on their faces. Being able to sit one-on-one with the treatment dog is very precious. The treatment dog program is very important and being able to align with the "National Dog Show" strengthens this.

The "National Dog Show" will be broadcast in all time zones of NBC at 12 noon on November 25, and will be broadcast simultaneously on Peacock. The "Little National Dog Show" will be broadcast on Peacock on November 25th.
